Apostle Islands National Lakeshore protects the largest collection of lighthouses in the National Park system, with nine historic beacons scattered across pristine Lake Superior islands. Families discover incredible sea caves carved by thousands of years of wave action, including the famous mainland caves near Meyers Beach that kayakers can paddle through in summer. The 21 islands showcase diverse ecosystems from sandy beaches to old-growth forests, while the crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior maintain temperatures in the 40s even in summer. What truly sets this lakeshore apart is its accessibility only by water—creating an authentic wilderness island-hopping adventure unlike any other Great Lakes destination.

Best Season: Summer (June-August) offers the warmest weather and best access to island activities, though fall provides spectacular colors with fewer crowds.

Best Ages for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Ages 4–8

Young children love the lighthouse activities and simple wildlife identification pages in the booklet. The maritime theme captures their imagination as they learn about lighthouse keepers and spot eagles soaring overhead. Ferry rides between islands provide natural breaks and excitement for shorter attention spans.

Ages 9–12

This age group truly engages with the Lake Superior ecosystem activities and enjoys learning about shipwrecks and maritime history. The Ojibwe cultural components in the Activity Guide offer fascinating perspectives that expand their understanding of the region's heritage. Kids this age can handle longer hikes to lighthouses and appreciate the geological formation of the sea caves.

Ages 13+

Teens and adults complete additional activities that dive deeper into conservation challenges and the complex relationship between human activity and this fragile lake ecosystem. The program encourages critical thinking about climate change impacts on the Great Lakes and the ongoing efforts to preserve this unique wilderness. The virtual tours and at-home completion option work well for families planning future visits.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

The park headquarters and main visitor center are located in Bayfield, Wisconsin, with additional visitor centers on some islands accessible by ferry or private boat. No entrance fees are required, but ferry services to the islands operate on seasonal schedules and charge separate transportation fees. Island access depends entirely on boat transportation, so plan accordingly for weather delays.

Van & RV Notes

Our Sprinter van fits comfortably at Bayfield area campgrounds, though hookups fill quickly in summer season. Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island offers spacious RV sites accessible by car ferry, providing an excellent base camp for island exploration. Several mainland campgrounds near Bayfield accommodate larger RVs, but book well in advance for summer visits.

Best Time to Visit

June through August offers the warmest weather for comfortable island exploration, though Lake Superior remains quite cold for swimming. September brings stunning fall colors with fewer crowds but unpredictable weather conditions that can cancel ferry services. Spring visits require flexibility due to rough lake conditions and limited ferry schedules.

How Long to Spend

Plan at least two days to properly experience the Junior Ranger program and visit multiple islands with their historic lighthouses. Ferry schedules and weather conditions often require flexible timing, making this more of a multi-day adventure than a quick park visit.

Don't Miss

The sea caves near Meyers Beach offer incredible kayaking experiences when lake conditions permit, while the historic lighthouses on various islands provide fascinating glimpses into Great Lakes maritime history. Families consistently love the ferry rides themselves, which often include wildlife spotting opportunities and stunning views of the pristine Lake Superior wilderness.
