Constitution Gardens stands as the youngest memorial on the National Mall, created from dredged Potomac River material when the Reflecting Pool was built in the 1920s. The park's centerpiece is Signers Island, accessible via a charming footbridge, where 56 granite blocks honor each signer of the Declaration of Independence with their actual signatures carved in stone. Families discover this peaceful 50-acre oasis offers a unique combination of water features, walking paths, and living history just steps from the Lincoln Memorial. The park's design as a memorial landscape means every tree, path, and sight line was intentionally planned to create contemplative spaces for reflection on American founding principles.

Best Season: Spring through fall offers the best weather for outdoor exploration, with beautiful cherry blossoms nearby in early spring and comfortable temperatures for walking.

Ages 4–7

Little ones love crossing the footbridge to Signers Island and spotting their favorite animals in the pond. The granite signature stones make perfect spots for rubbings, and families find the peaceful walking paths ideal for teaching basic concepts about America's founding fathers.

Ages 8–12

This age group truly connects with reading the actual signatures and occupations carved into the memorial stones. Kids enjoy the detective work of finding specific signers and learning how ordinary people like farmers and merchants helped create our country.

Ages 13+

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

Limited street parking is available on Constitution Avenue during posted hours, but public transportation is strongly recommended due to high demand. The park sits approximately one mile from three Metro stops: Foggy Bottom, Farragut West, and Smithsonian. Bicycle access is available on sidewalks and paved paths throughout the area.

Van & RV Notes

Large RVs and vans like our Sprinter face significant challenges in downtown DC with limited parking and height restrictions under many bridges. We recommend staying at campgrounds outside the city and using Metro to reach Constitution Gardens. Street parking for vans is extremely limited and often restricted during peak hours.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the most peaceful experience, as the park can get crowded during peak tourist hours between 10am-3pm. Spring through fall provides the most comfortable weather for outdoor exploration, with cherry blossoms blooming nearby in March and April adding extra beauty to the experience.

How Long to Spend

Plan 1-2 hours to fully explore Constitution Gardens and complete Junior Ranger activities. The compact size makes it perfect for combining with visits to nearby monuments like Lincoln Memorial or Vietnam Veterans Memorial in a single morning or afternoon.

Don't Miss

Walking across the footbridge to Signers Island is absolutely essential - kids love the adventure of crossing water to reach the memorial stones. Families consistently enjoy making signature rubbings from the granite blocks and discovering that signers included everyone from wealthy merchants to humble farmers who risked everything for independence.
