First Ladies National Historic Site preserves the childhood home of Ida Saxton McKinley and tells the evolving story of America's presidential spouses through two downtown Canton locations. The beautifully restored Saxton House, where Ida lived for 28 years including her time with President William McKinley, features period rooms that showcase 1800s domestic life. The Education & Research Center houses the world's largest collection of First Ladies artifacts, including inaugural gowns, White House china, and personal correspondence. What sets this site apart from other presidential homes is its focus on the often-overlooked yet influential women who shaped American history from behind the scenes.

Best Season: Spring through fall offers the most comfortable weather for exploring the historic house and grounds, with special programming often available during summer months.

Best Ages for First Ladies National Historic Site

Ages 8 & Under

The youngest visitors truly love the hands-on activities that explore First Ladies' roles through creative projects like designing their own White House china and comparing historical rooms to modern homes. The booklet's fill-in-the-blank activities and drawing exercises keep little hands busy while learning about important women in history. These activities work perfectly for short attention spans and help kids connect presidential history to their own family experiences.

Ages 9 & Over

Older kids engage deeply with the more complex activities exploring gender roles, social expectations, and how the position of First Lady has evolved over time. The program challenges them to think critically about leadership, public service, and social change through thought-provoking scenarios about future First Spouses. These activities encourage kids to consider how historical roles might continue changing and what they would do in similar positions.

Ages 9 & Over

Teens and adults find the program's exploration of women's changing roles in society particularly engaging, especially activities examining media scrutiny and public expectations. The booklet doesn't shy away from discussing real challenges First Ladies have faced, making it relevant for young people thinking about leadership and public service. The critical thinking exercises about hypothetical "First Men" generate excellent family discussions about gender roles and societal expectations.

No campgrounds are directly affiliated with the site, but nearby options include Clay's Park Resort about 20 minutes south with full hookups.

Best Time to Visit

Visit May through October when both buildings operate on extended hours Tuesday through Saturday, offering more tour times and programs. Winter visits (November-April) mean reduced hours Thursday through Saturday only, but you'll encounter fewer crowds and more personalized attention from rangers. Summer months feature special Junior Ranger programs and living history demonstrations that bring the First Ladies' stories to vivid life.

How Long to Spend

Plan a half-day visit to tour both the Saxton House and Education Center plus complete Junior Ranger activities. The guided house tour takes about 45 minutes, with another hour exploring exhibits and completing booklet activities.

Don't Miss

The Saxton House's formal parlor showcases an incredibly authentic Victorian-era room where families can truly imagine life in the 1800s, complete with period furniture and Ida's personal belongings.
