The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site preserves the birthplace and lifelong home of America's only four-term president, where families can explore the actual rooms where FDR lived, worked, and made history-changing decisions. The estate spans over 1,000 acres of Hudson River Valley landscapes, including FDR's beloved tree plantations where he personally planted over 21 acres between 1912 and 1944. Kids discover Top Cottage, FDR's hilltop retreat where he hosted world leaders during World War II, and walk through the Rose Garden where both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt are buried according to FDR's own wishes. The Presidential Library here was America's first presidential library, establishing a tradition that continues today.

Best Ages for Home Of Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic Site

Ages 6–8

Younger kids love the guided home tours where they can see FDR's childhood bedroom and imagine living in such a grand mansion. The gardens and grounds provide plenty of space to explore, though the historical content works best when parents help connect the stories to what kids observe. The 20-minute park film offers a good introduction before touring the house.

Ages 9–12

This age group truly connects with FDR's story of overcoming challenges, especially learning how he adapted after becoming paralyzed and still became president. They enjoy the hands-on exhibits about accessibility and innovation, plus exploring Top Cottage Trail to see where world leaders met during critical moments. The Junior Ranger activities help them understand civic responsibility and presidential leadership in engaging ways.

Ages 13–15

Teens appreciate the complex historical context of FDR's presidency, from the Great Depression through World War II, and can engage deeply with exhibits at the Presidential Library. They often find the accessibility innovations fascinating, understanding how FDR's personal challenges shaped his empathy for others facing difficulties. The booklet challenges them to think critically about leadership and democracy.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

The historic site is located along Route 9 in Hyde Park, about 1.5 hours from either New York City or Albany. Entrance to FDR's home requires guided tours sold first-come, first-served at the Wallace Visitor Center, so arrive early during peak season. Parking accommodates larger vehicles, but tour groups can fill spots quickly during summer months.

Van & RV Notes

The visitor parking area works well for Sprinter vans and larger RVs, with level paved surfaces and easy maneuvering. No campgrounds exist within the park, but several private campgrounds in the Hudson Valley area can accommodate van life families exploring the region. The site's flat terrain makes it very accessible for families traveling with mobility equipment.

Best Time to Visit

Spring through fall offers the most comfortable experience, with gardens in bloom and all trails accessible. October brings beautiful fall foliage across the estate, while summer can be crowded with tour groups but offers the longest daylight hours for exploring. Winter visits are possible but some outdoor features may have limited access.

How Long to Spend

Plan a full day to experience both the guided home tour, Presidential Library exhibits, and walk the trails to Top Cottage. Families often combine this with nearby Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill cottage for a complete Roosevelt experience.

Don't Miss

The guided tour of FDR's actual home reveals intimate family spaces where presidential decisions were made, including his mother's influence on his life and career. Walk the Top Cottage Trail to reach the same hilltop retreat where FDR hosted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, plus Churchill and other world leaders during pivotal World War II meetings.

Fun Facts for Kids

🌋

FDR's mother Sara Roosevelt lived in the house until her death in 1941, and she had significant influence over Franklin's early political career

🦬

The estate's icehouse, built in the 1800s, stored ice cut from the Hudson River each winter to preserve food year-round before refrigeration

🌲

FDR personally designed and supervised the planting of over 500,000 trees on the property, turning unused land into managed forests

Top Cottage was built without formal dining rooms because FDR preferred cooking hot dogs and hamburgers for his distinguished international guests
