Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park captures the raw power of the 77-foot Great Falls of the Passaic River, the second-largest waterfall by volume east of the Mississippi River. Families can explore the overlook platforms that provide stunning views of the thundering cascade while walking through America's first planned industrial city, designed by Alexander Hamilton in 1792. The park preserves the historic Hinchliffe Stadium where the New York Black Yankees played, alongside remnants of the silk mills and locomotive works that once made Paterson the 'Silk City of the World.' What truly sets this park apart is how it showcases the intersection of natural power and human ingenuity — where immigrant communities from around the world came to harness waterpower and build America's industrial foundation.

Best Season: Spring through fall offers the best weather for exploring the outdoor overlooks and historic mill district, with spring providing the most dramatic waterfall flow.

Best Ages for Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park

Age ranges are suggested groupings — check at the visitor center for the official Junior Ranger booklet breakdown.

Ages 4–7

Young kids love watching the powerful waterfall from the safe overlook areas and listening to stories about the workers who lived here long ago. The rushing water sound and mist create excitement, though the industrial history concepts may be challenging for this age group.

Ages 8–12

This age group truly connects with learning how the waterfall powered the machines that made silk cloth and locomotives. Kids can better understand the immigration stories and visualize how the mills operated using water power from the falls.

Ages 13+

Teens and adults appreciate the complex history of labor movements, urban planning, and industrial innovation that shaped America. The connection between Hamilton's vision and modern manufacturing resonates strongly with this age group.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

The Hinchliffe Stadium parking lot on Liberty Street offers easier access than the main visitor center lot at 72 McBride Avenue Extension. Street parking in downtown Paterson fills quickly on weekends, so arrive early or use the stadium lot for larger vehicles.

Van & RV Notes

The main visitor center parking lot can be challenging for larger vehicles — our 22-foot Sprinter fits better at the Hinchliffe Stadium lot. No overnight parking is available within the park, but several private campgrounds exist within 30 minutes of the falls.

Best Time to Visit

Spring offers the most dramatic waterfall flow from snowmelt and rain, making April through June ideal for photography and experiencing the falls' full power. Summer and fall provide comfortable walking weather, though water levels may be lower during dry periods.

How Long to Spend

Plan 2-3 hours to fully explore the overlooks, walk through the historic district, and participate in any available ranger programs.

Don't Miss

The main overlook platform provides the most dramatic view of the Great Falls' full 77-foot drop, especially powerful during spring high water. Families also love exploring the preserved Hinchliffe Stadium, where you can walk on the same field where Negro League baseball players made history.
