Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park
Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park preserves the remarkable story of Richmond's Kaiser Shipyards, where over 90,000 workers built 747 Liberty and Victory ships in just four years. Families explore the last surviving Victory ship, the SS Red Oak Victory, and discover how this diverse community of workers—including thousands of women and African Americans—transformed American manufacturing forever. The park's Visitor Education Center features interactive exhibits where kids can experience wartime rationing, victory gardens, and the daily life of home front families. What makes this park unique is its focus on civilian contributions to the war effort, showcasing how entire communities mobilized to support the troops overseas through innovative shipbuilding techniques and social change.

Best Ages for Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park
Age ranges are suggested groupings — check at the visitor center for the official Junior Ranger booklet breakdown.
Ages 4–7
Younger children love the interactive exhibits in the visitor center, especially the hands-on displays about victory gardens and wartime toys. The ship tour can be exciting but involves stairs and narrow passages—consider your child's comfort level. We recommend starting with the visitor center film to help them understand the time period before exploring historic sites.
Ages 8–12
This age group truly connects with the Junior Ranger activities that explore home front jobs, rationing, and the changing roles of women during wartime. They enjoy the SS Red Oak Victory ship tour and can better appreciate the engineering marvels of the Kaiser Shipyards. The activity book's point system keeps them engaged as they discover how kids their age lived during WWII.
Ages 13+
Teens and adults find the complex social history fascinating, especially stories of migration, civil rights, and women entering the workforce in unprecedented numbers. The self-guided historic site tours allow for deeper exploration of Richmond's wartime transformation. Older participants can tackle the more challenging activities and fully appreciate the park's focus on diverse community experiences during wartime.
Planning Your Visit
Getting There
Park at the large Visitor Education Center lot on Marina Bay Parkway, which easily accommodates RVs and vans with restrooms and exhibits nearby. For the SS Red Oak Victory ship tour, you'll drive separately to the Richmond Marina—check current tour schedules as they're operated by the Richmond Museum Association. No entrance fees or advance reservations required for the visitor center.
Van & RV Notes
The visitor center parking lot handles our 22-foot Sprinter van comfortably with level spaces and good maneuvering room. No overnight parking is allowed, but several RV parks exist in the Richmond area for extended stays. The historic shipyard sites have street parking that may be challenging for larger rigs—stick to the visitor center as your primary base.
Best Time to Visit
Spring through fall offers the best weather for outdoor shipyard exploration, though be prepared for typical Bay Area conditions—fog in summer and wind year-round. The indoor visitor center and ship tours are enjoyable any season, making this park particularly good for rainy day alternatives. Weekdays tend to be less crowded than weekends for the ship tours.
How Long to Spend
Plan a half day to experience the visitor center thoroughly and complete Junior Ranger activities—the park's compact size makes it perfect for families with varying attention spans. If you include the SS Red Oak Victory ship tour, budget a full day to truly appreciate both the indoor exhibits and hands-on maritime experience.
Don't Miss
The SS Red Oak Victory ship tour absolutely captures kids' imaginations as they explore the actual cargo holds, engine room, and crew quarters where shipbuilders worked around the clock. The visitor center's interactive exhibits let families experience wartime rationing firsthand and discover how victory gardens helped feed communities during food shortages.
