And a Happy Christmas to All!
Each year, we trade our modern world for a stroll back in time, to The Great Dickens Christmas Fair. After loading the van with Victorian wear, we hop in and head to the Cow Palace, home to the best Victorian Christmas celebration in the entire country.

Then we enter the Grand Concourse, with its makeshift cobbled streets, bustling market stalls, and lively street performers. It feels as if weβve stepped directly into a Dickens novel. Everywhere we turn, thereβs a story waiting, and every face is a character, from chimney sweeps to royalty. The air is alive with the aromas of roasting chestnuts, savory shepherdβs pies, and spiced mulled cider. At the pubs there are frothy mugs of mead and other Christmas libations. The vendors offer sweet treats like plum pudding and hearty Victorian fare. The warmth and spirit of the season is held in every frothy mug and every dance floor waltz.

Rolling into Victorian Streets
Even before entering the Fair, the journey itself is part of the adventure. We drive the van through foggy winter mornings to the Cow Palace. The moment we step through the Cow Palace gates, we are instantly whisked away back in time, from modern San Francisco into the streets of Victorian London.

Cobblestones, Characters, and Christmas Cheer
Inside the Cow Palace, the Fair bursts to life like stepping into Dickensβ London. The streets hum with activity. Queen Victoriaβs parade marches past, regal and grand, and Father Christmas strolls through the crowds, boasting a Happy Christmas to all.
Down by the docks, the mischievous ruffians of Faginβs Alley live and scheme, the perfect spot for us to settle into our Van Life element. Adventurous and open, we roam, wheels replacing boots. Coming from a Midwestern working-class background, I feel our Van Life family carries the same zest for life and cleverness as the dockside characters of Victorian London.
We also stop in Dickensβ Study, where passages from Edgar Allan Poe andΒ A Christmas CarolΒ are recited, filling the room with the voice and spirit of Victorian literature. Stepping back outside onto the bustling streets, the contrast truly brings the world ofΒ A Tale of Two CitiesΒ to life.

The Great Dance Hall is a whirlwind of music and movement, with costumed dancers twirling across the polished floor to lively Victorian tunes. The onlookers eventually join in, or simply watch in delight. The energy is contagious, and even from the sidelines, you can feel the joy and rhythm of a bygone era carried into the present.

Van Life, Victorian Style
Each winding alley and every performance adds layers to the day, blending laughter, nostalgia, and a touch of Victorian magic. This is the heart of the Fair, the part that keeps us returning year after year. What began as an accidental Van Life Christmas has grown into a Victorian celebration. A celebration now layered with years of warmth and holiday tidings at the Great Dickens Fair.

Cheers to creating Happy Christmas Van Life memories that feel as timeless as the stories themselves.
