Arches National Park protects the world's largest concentration of natural stone arches, with over 2,000 documented formations carved by millions of years of wind, water, and salt movement beneath the surface. Families explore famous landmarks like Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch, and the towering red fins of the Fiery Furnace, where narrow passages create a natural maze perfect for adventurous kids. The park's unique geology stems from an underground salt bed that shifts and buckles the sandstone layers above, creating the spectacular arches, balanced rocks, and towering spires that make this landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth. What sets Arches apart from other red rock destinations is the sheer density of these natural sculptures—families can easily see dozens of arches in a single day, each telling a different story of geological time.

Best Season: Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer perfect temperatures for hiking with kids, avoiding summer's extreme heat that can reach over 100°F.

Best Ages for Arches National Park

Age ranges are suggested groupings — check at the visitor center for the official Junior Ranger booklet breakdown.

Ages 4–7

Young children love the hands-on activities that help them understand how arches form through simple experiments and drawings. The booklet's adventure activities work perfectly at this age—short walks to Windows Section arches and Balanced Rock keep attention spans engaged. Many exercises involve coloring and identifying desert animals, which helps little ones connect with the park's wildlife.

Ages 8–12

This age group truly shines with the geological activities that explain how salt movement creates arches over millions of years. Kids this age can tackle longer hikes to Delicate Arch or Landscape Arch while completing observation exercises about erosion and rock layers. The Leave No Trace activities resonate well as they develop their own outdoor ethics.

Ages 13+

Teens and adults appreciate the more complex geological concepts about the Colorado Plateau and can complete all booklet activities for a thorough park experience. They often enjoy the photography challenges and detailed rock formation studies that come with hiking to multiple arch locations. The program's flexibility allows them to dive deeper into topics that interest them most.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

The park entrance is just 5 miles north of Moab on US 191, making it incredibly accessible for families staying in town. Parking fills quickly at popular trailheads like Delicate Arch and Fiery Furnace, so we recommend arriving before 8am or after 3pm during busy seasons. The scenic drive through the park connects all major viewpoints and trailheads without requiring reservations.

Van & RV Notes

Devils Garden Campground accommodates RVs up to 40 feet with no hookups, and our Sprinter fits comfortably in most sites, though reservations are essential months in advance. The campground road is paved but narrow in sections, requiring careful maneuvering for longer rigs. Many families find staying in Moab more convenient for amenities, with the park just minutes away.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer ideal hiking weather with daytime temperatures in the 60s-80s, perfect for completing Junior Ranger activities outdoors. Summer brings extreme heat over 100°F that makes midday hiking dangerous with kids, while winter can be surprisingly cold with snow occasionally dusting the red rocks. March and October tend to have the best balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

How Long to Spend

Plan a full day to complete the Junior Ranger program activities while hiking to several arches and exploring the Fiery Furnace. Families typically need 4-6 hours to visit the main formations and finish enough booklet exercises to earn the badge.

Don't Miss

The Fiery Furnace ranger-led tour creates an unforgettable maze-like adventure through narrow rock passages that kids absolutely love, though it requires reservations and has a minimum age of 5. Sunset at Delicate Arch transforms the already spectacular formation into a glowing masterpiece that families consistently rank as their most memorable park moment.

Fun Facts for Kids

🌋

Landscape Arch spans 306 feet, making it one of the longest natural arches in the world—nearly the length of a football field

🦬

The park's arches are still forming and collapsing today; Wall Arch fell in 2008 after standing for thousands of years

🌲

Delicate Arch appears on Utah license plates and is the most famous symbol of the state

The red color comes from iron oxide (rust) coating the sandstone grains like a thin layer of paint
