Colorado National Monument showcases a dramatic landscape of towering red rock monoliths and deep canyons carved from Wingate Sandstone over millions of years. Families can drive the spectacular 23-mile Rim Rock Drive, spotting desert bighorn sheep scaling clifftops and golden eagles soaring above formations like Independence Monument and the Kissing Couple. The monument preserves ancient Precambrian basement rocks nearly 2 billion years old, exposed in the deepest canyon bottoms. Unlike crowded desert parks, Colorado National Monument offers incredible geological diversity and wildlife viewing opportunities with manageable crowds year-round.

Best Season: Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for families, with mild days perfect for hiking and wildlife viewing.

Best Ages for Colorado National Monument

Ages 7 & Under

Little ones complete at least 3 activities using the rabbit animal symbol throughout the booklet. They'll love the hands-on activities like identifying hiking gear, learning about protecting the park, and exploring plants around the visitor center. The simple drawing and observation activities perfectly match their attention spans while teaching Leave No Trace principles.

Ages 8–10

Kids in this group complete at least 5 activities marked with the lizard symbol, diving deeper into geology and desert adaptations. They'll tackle more complex puzzles like the weathering and erosion word game, biological soil crust layers, and animal track following activities. The booklet challenges them to understand how plants and animals survive in harsh desert conditions.

Ages 10 & Up

Older kids and teens complete at least 7 activities using the bighorn sheep symbol, engaging with advanced concepts like stratigraphic columns and Indigenous plant uses. They'll crack codes about John Otto's conservation work, complete detailed geological formations activities, and explore the monument's cultural history. The program truly challenges them to think like scientists and historians while developing conservation ethics.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

Two entrances provide easy access: the west entrance near Fruita (Exit 19 off I-70) and the east entrance through Grand Junction (Exit 31 off I-70). The monument stays open 24 hours year-round, though Rim Rock Drive occasionally closes for snow or ice. No reservations needed for day visits, and ample parking exists at the visitor center and major overlooks.

Van & RV Notes

Rim Rock Drive accommodates RVs and vans up to 40 feet, making it perfect for our 22-foot Sprinter with plenty of clearance. Saddlehorn Campground offers sites for RVs up to 40 feet with restrooms but no hookups — we've stayed comfortably with our solar setup. The drive's multiple pullouts provide easy stops for larger vehicles to enjoy canyon views.

Best Time to Visit

April through May and September through October offer ideal temperatures in the 70s-80s during the day, perfect for hiking and Junior Ranger activities. Summer brings intense heat often exceeding 100°F, though early morning and evening visits remain pleasant. Winter can be surprisingly beautiful with snow-dusted red rocks, but expect temperatures from 10-45°F and possible road closures during storms.

How Long to Spend

Plan a full day to complete Junior Ranger activities and drive Rim Rock Drive with stops at key overlooks. The program requires hiking or attending a ranger program, so budget extra time for trail exploration around the visitor center or Devils Kitchen area.

Don't Miss

Drive the complete 23-mile Rim Rock Drive for breathtaking views of Independence Monument, the Kissing Couple, and sweeping canyon panoramas that kids will remember forever. Visit the native plant gardens around the visitor center where Junior Rangers can complete their plant identification activities while learning how desert species survive extreme conditions.

Fun Facts for Kids

🌋

Independence Monument stands 450 feet tall and was first climbed in 1911 using a ladder system that took three days to complete

🦬

Desert bighorn sheep can leap 20 feet between rock ledges and climb nearly vertical cliff faces using special hooves with rubbery pads

🌲

The biological soil crust that looks like black bumpy dirt is actually alive, made of bacteria, algae, and fungus that can take 100 years to recover if damaged

John Otto, the monument's first custodian, was paid $1 per month and lived in a tent while building over 20 miles of trails by hand
