Dry Tortugas National Park protects one of the most remote and pristine marine ecosystems in the United States, where massive Fort Jefferson sits on Garden Key surrounded by crystal-clear waters teeming with sea turtles, tropical fish, and coral reefs. The fort itself is an engineering marvel—a massive six-sided structure built with over 16 million bricks, making it one of the largest masonry fortifications in the Western Hemisphere. Families explore both above and below the waterline, from the fort's historic moat walls to snorkeling the vibrant coral reefs of Little Africa. Unlike any other national park, Dry Tortugas combines Civil War history with world-class marine sanctuary protection, accessible only by ferry or seaplane across 70 miles of open ocean.

Best Season: Visit between October and April for the best weather, calmer seas, and peak bird migration season when kids can spot magnificent frigatebirds and sooty terns.

Best Ages for Dry Tortugas National Park

Age ranges are suggested groupings — check at the visitor center for the official Junior Ranger booklet breakdown.

Ages 4–7

Young children absolutely love exploring Fort Jefferson's massive walls and discovering the wildlife around the moat area. The fort's size can be overwhelming, so families find success focusing on shorter activities like spotting hermit crabs and watching for sea birds. The ferry ride itself becomes a major highlight for this age group.

Ages 8–12

This age group thrives with the combination of history and marine science that Dry Tortugas offers perfectly. Kids can handle the longer Junior Ranger activities about Civil War history, sea turtle protection, and coral reef ecosystems. Many families find this the ideal age for snorkeling around the fort walls to see the underwater world.

Ages 13+

Teens and adults can tackle the comprehensive Junior Ranger Underwater Explorer program, which dives deep into marine conservation and the park's role protecting coral reefs. The historical complexity of Fort Jefferson as a Civil War prison and the engineering feat of building in such a remote location truly captivates older participants. Many complete both the standard and underwater explorer programs during their visit.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

The park is accessible only by ferry from Key West (requires advance reservations, especially peak season) or chartered seaplane. Ferry tickets include park entrance fees, but you'll need cash for camping fees if staying overnight. The ferry dock at Key West has limited parking, so arrive early during busy periods.

Van & RV Notes

Since the park is island-based, your Sprinter stays parked at the Key West ferry terminal area. We recommend securing paid parking in advance during peak season as ferry terminal parking fills quickly. The park offers primitive camping on Garden Key for those wanting to stay overnight, but all gear must be carried from the ferry dock.

Best Time to Visit

October through April offers the calmest seas and most comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for families with young children. Winter months bring spectacular bird migration, including frigatebirds and sooty terns that kids love watching. Summer brings rougher seas and higher humidity, but also fewer crowds if you can handle the tropical heat.

How Long to Spend

Most families spend a full day exploring Fort Jefferson, completing Junior Ranger activities, and snorkeling. The ferry allows about 4.5 hours on the island, which is perfect for combining historical exploration with marine activities without overwhelming younger kids.

Don't Miss

Snorkeling the moat wall around Fort Jefferson offers kids an incredible underwater view of the fort's massive foundation and abundant marine life. The sunset ceremony where park rangers lower the flag from atop Fort Jefferson creates a truly memorable moment for families, especially when combined with the stunning 360-degree ocean views.
