Photo: NPS PhotoSaint-Gaudens National Historical Park preserves the only National Park Service site dedicated to a 19th-century American sculptor, where Augustus Saint-Gaudens created some of America's most iconic monuments including the bronze Shaw Memorial and the $20 gold coin designs. Families explore his preserved studios, forge, and meticulously maintained formal gardens that showcase over 100 varieties of flowers arranged in geometric patterns. The park's unique artist colony history comes alive through the Cornish Colony legacy, where Saint-Gaudens hosted fellow artists, writers, and musicians in this creative New Hampshire retreat. What sets this park apart is the combination of hands-on art experiences with the actual tools and spaces where masterpieces were born.

Best Ages for Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park
Age ranges are suggested groupings — check at the visitor center for the official Junior Ranger booklet breakdown.
Ages 4–7
Young visitors absolutely love exploring the sculpture gardens and watching art demonstrations when available. The hands-on art activities work well for this age group, though adult assistance helps with more detailed sketching activities. We recommend focusing on the outdoor sculptures and gardens rather than spending extended time in the indoor galleries.
Ages 8–12
This age group truly enjoys learning about the sculpture-making process and can handle more independent exploration of the studios and galleries. Kids this age often connect well with the Junior Ranger activities that combine art creation with historical learning. The forge demonstrations particularly capture their attention when offered during peak season.
Ages 13+
Teens and adults appreciate the sophisticated artistic techniques and historical context of Saint-Gaudens' work within the broader American art movement. They can engage more deeply with the complex stories behind famous monuments and understand the social and political significance of the sculptures. The park's connection to the broader Cornish Colony of artists provides rich material for older participants interested in American cultural history.
Planning Your Visit
Getting There
The main parking area accommodates most vehicles, but families with larger RVs should note the covered bridge from Vermont is closed to vehicles over certain size limits. Arrive early during summer weekends as parking fills quickly near the visitor center. Entry fees are collected 9am-4pm for visitors 16 and older, with children 15 and under free.
Van & RV Notes
Our Sprinter van fits comfortably in the main parking area, though spaces can be tight during peak times. No overnight parking or camping is available at the park itself. Families planning extended stays typically use nearby New Hampshire state parks or private campgrounds in the upper Connecticut River valley area.
Best Time to Visit
Late May through early October offers the best experience when buildings and studios are open, with peak bloom in the formal gardens occurring June through September. Summer weekends bring the most crowds and programming, while early fall provides beautiful foliage with fewer visitors. The park closes most facilities November through May, though grounds remain accessible for those interested in winter activities like snowshoeing.
How Long to Spend
Plan a half-day visit to thoroughly explore the studios, gardens, and complete Junior Ranger activities without rushing. Families often combine this with other New Hampshire or Vermont attractions since the park's compact size makes it an excellent addition to a longer New England itinerary.
Don't Miss
The restored studios contain Saint-Gaudens' actual tools and unfinished works, giving families an authentic glimpse into the creative process that produced America's most celebrated public monuments. The formal gardens, designed by the sculptor himself, provide a stunning backdrop for art activities and offer some of the most picturesque views in the Connecticut River valley.
